KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — SkyNano Technologies, developer of an electrochemical manufacturing technique for the production of carbon-based nanomaterials using carbon dioxide and electricity, announced Dr. David L. Wood III will be assuming the new role of Director of Engineering. Skynano will utilize Wood’s expertise to enhance manufacturing technology that leverages proprietary electrochemistry enabling low-cost, highly scalable and sustainable manufacturing of advanced carbon materials for a variety of applications.

Wood joins SkyNano from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he worked since 2009, most recently as a senior scientist in the Roll-to-Roll Manufacturing Group. Wood previously served as a group leader and program manager for the Fuel Cells Technology Program, and has studied a broad range of electrochemical energy storage systems, with specific expertise in novel electrode architectures, mass transport phenomena, solid-liquid surface chemistry, advanced processing methods, manufacturing science, and materials characterization for low-temperature fuel cells, PEM electrolyzers, lithium-ion batteries, and sodium-ion batteries.

Wood brings a wealth of experience, both from national laboratories, as well as industrial experience, to the SkyNano team. Prior to ORNL, Wood worked at GM, SGL Carbon, and Cabot Corporation. Wood’s work has been widely recognized throughout literature and awards including a 2013 R&D 100 award, and he is a prolific inventor, having received over 18 patents and patent applications.

“Bringing David on board will help us expand our engineering and market share while strengthening SkyNano’s existing industrial relationships,” said Anna Douglas, Co-Founder of SkyNano Technologies. “Our customers are some of the most prominent industrial manufacturers in the country, and they look to us to provide solutions and technologies that are unparalleled in efficiency. That begins and ends with our team’s sustained focus on developing the best-in-class technologies and techniques.”

In his new role at SkyNano, Wood will drive the engineering efforts towards SkyNano’s scaling of its novel multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) production technology using CO2. Wood will also help strengthen SkyNano’s existing industrial relationships and expand into new markets, along with using his previous experience managing multimillion dollar annual budgets to support SkyNano’s fundraising efforts.

Wood joined SkyNano on the heels of significant company growth. In the past year alone, SkyNano was awarded $2.5 million by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Fuels (FE) to partner with TVA and NREL, and a $225K STTR award by the U.S. DOD’s Office of Vehicle Technology. With a nearly $100 billion dollar market opportunity for next generation technology to use carbon nanotubes, SkyNano is seeing massive success in their industry and expects to see even more in the coming years.

About SkyNano Technologies

SkyNano is a science-based technology company focused on commercializing a free-market solution to carbon pollution. It specifically develops a novel electrochemical manufacturing technology for the capture and conversion of CO2 from various sources (atmospheric, concentrated, flue gas) into valuable carbon-based materials such as carbon nanotubes. SkyNano’s technology has been featured in many peer-review scientific papers, received recognition from a 2020 R&D100 award, and was recognized with a Forbes 30 Under 30 award to our Co-Founder and CEO Dr. Anna Douglas. In fact, both SkyNano founders are Forbes 30 Under 30 innovators, as Prof. Cary Pint was awarded the recognition in the inaugural year of the awards.
