KNOXILLE, Tenn. – SkyNano Technologies, a science-based startup and developer of a manufacturing technique for the capture and conversion of CO2 from various sources into valuable carbon-based materials, has been announced by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) Commissioner David Salyers as a winner of the 2022 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards.
The winners will be formally recognized at an awards ceremony July 25 in Franklin for their achievements and positive impact on the state’s natural resources and communities.
“We are proud to recognize those who work diligently to protect Tennessee’s unmatched beauty and natural resources,” Gov. Bill Lee said. “They exemplify a commitment to conservation and responsible stewardship, and we commend them for their excellent work.”
“This is an impressive list of winners, and we are glad TDEC can once again present these awards,” TDEC Commissioner Salyers said. “The winners go above and beyond expectations, and we congratulate them for their achievements.”
The Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards program recognizes exceptional voluntary actions that improve or protect the environment and natural resources with projects or initiatives not required by law or regulation.
In its 36th year, the awards program covers the following categories: agriculture and forestry; building green; clean air; energy and renewable resources; environmental education and outreach; materials management; natural resources; sustainable performance; and water quality. SkyNano has received the prestigious award in the clean air category.
“We’re extremely excited for this state-wide recognition of our efforts at SkyNano, and are proud to be a Tennessee-homegrown company,” SkyNano CEO Anna Douglas said. “The core technology was first developed at Vanderbilt University, incubated at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Innovation Crossroads, accelerated at the UT Spark Business Center, and is now scaling in a commercial lab in Knoxville.”
A panel of nine professionals representing agriculture, conservation, forestry, environment, and academic professions judged more than 60 nominations and selected this year’s award recipients based on criteria including on-the-ground environmental achievement, innovation, transferability, partnerships, and public education.

About SkyNano Technologies
SkyNano is a science-based technology company focused on commercializing a free-market solution to carbon pollution. It specifically develops a novel electrochemical manufacturing technology for the capture and conversion of CO2 from various sources (atmospheric, concentrated, flue gas) into valuable carbon-based materials such as carbon nanotubes. SkyNano’s technology has been featured in many peer-review scientific papers, received recognition from a 2020 R&D100 award, a 2021 TechConnect Innovation Award, and was recognized with a Forbes 30 Under 30 award to our Co-Founder and CEO Dr. Anna Douglas. In fact, both SkyNano founders are Forbes 30 Under 30 innovators, as Prof. Cary Pint was awarded the recognition in the inaugural year of the awards.
